What We Offer

Services that work around your life.

What your support worker provides

Person-centred support

Your support is built around your goals, preferences, and NDIS plan — not a generic schedule.

Safe, reliable attendance

We show up when rostered. Consistent workers mean you build rapport and trust over time.

Skill-building alongside support

Where your goals include building independence, we focus on skill development — not just task completion.

Transport included

Where transport is needed, we can use our wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) or standard vehicle — depending on your requirements. See below.

Outcome reporting

Progress notes and shift reports keep your support team, Support Coordinator, and plan manager informed.

Real outings. Real people. Real lives.

This is what social support looks like.

From fishing trips and farm visits to live concerts and dining out — our participants get out, connect, and live their lives.

Everyday Access

Need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle? We've got that.

If you use a wheelchair or require wheelchair-accessible transport, our Everyday Access service means you don't need to coordinate a separate provider. A Yellowbird support worker drives our Toyota HiAce WAV — fitted with a rear electric platform lift — and delivers your support, so transport and support are provided together by our team. The bus is only available with a Yellowbird support worker; we do not offer dry hire or vehicle-only bookings.

Toyota HiAce with rear electric platform lift
Secure wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint
Support workers OT-assessed and driving instructor assessed
Telarah and Stroud bases — enquire about your pickup area
Travel billed at $3.50/km (NDIS non-labour transport)
Supports can be delivered with WAV or standard vehicle — your choice

Seating configuration

Rear cabin5 comfortable passenger seats
Wheelchair bay1 dedicated space — or 2 additional seats when not required
Front passenger1 seat alongside the support worker

See the FAQ section below for detailed information on bookings, vehicle use, travel billing, and more.

WAV vs Standard vehicle — which is right for you?

Everyday Access — WAV

For participants who use a powered or manual wheelchair. A Yellowbird support worker drives our Toyota HiAce with platform lift and delivers your support. The bus is not available for dry hire.

Standard vehicle

For participants who don't need wheelchair-accessible transport. A Yellowbird support worker uses a standard vehicle for community access. Same great support — different vehicle.

Not sure which you need?

We'll discuss your requirements at intake and recommend the right option. You can also ask your OT or Support Coordinator.

Common Questions

Social, Community & Everyday Access FAQs

How do I get started?

Call 0433 030 949, email info@yellowbird.au or send a referral. Tell us what supports you need, how often, whether you need the wheelchair-accessible vehicle and how your supports are funded. We will talk through availability in your area, shift times and a service agreement before supports begin.

Can I hire the bus or bring another provider's worker to drive it?

No. We do not offer dry hire or vehicle-only bookings. Our wheelchair-accessible bus is provided only with a Yellowbird support worker, who drives the vehicle and delivers your support.

Is this a transport or taxi service?

No. Yellowbird is not a taxi service and does not provide rides only. You are choosing Yellowbird as your NDIS support provider. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) is used when required to enable safe access and participation in your supports.

Who is this service suitable for?

Participants who require daily living or community participation supports, need a provider who can accommodate wheelchair-access requirements, want a single provider delivering both supports and WAV access, and prefer a support-led, outcome-focused approach.

Where is the wheelchair bus based?

Our wheelchair-bus bases are Telarah in Maitland LGA and Stroud in MidCoast LGA. A Yellowbird support worker drives and delivers your support — no dry hire or vehicle-only bookings. Please enquire about your pickup location, accessibility needs, travel costs and availability.

Can you provide services outside Maitland LGA?

Yes, support work covers MidCoast, Maitland, Dungog and Port Stephens LGAs and the Mid North Coast region by arrangement. We will recruit your team or discuss welcoming your existing team; start dates depend on recruitment and matching. Bus availability and travel from Telarah or Stroud are confirmed separately for your booking.

Are support workers trained to drive and manage wheelchairs?

Yes. All Yellowbird support workers using the WAV have been assessed by an Occupational Therapist (OT) driver assessor, assessed by a licensed driving instructor, and are trained in safe wheelchair loading and unloading procedures.

Can I book regular or occasional supports?

Yes. You can engage Yellowbird for regular, rostered support shifts, or additional and irregular supports by contacting us. Availability is confirmed when you book.

How are shifts structured?

Minimum 2-hour shift, delivered by a qualified support worker. Support is provided before, during, and after activities as required.

How does travel time work?

Travel time can be in addition to your rostered shift, or built into the minimum 2-hour shift. This is agreed with you in advance.

How are kilometres billed?

Kilometres are billed at $3.50 per kilometre (subject to change) and relate only to travel required to deliver your supports.

How are kilometres claimed under the NDIS?

Kilometres are claimed as non-labour travel from either the identified budget your support is delivered from (e.g. Daily Activities or Social & Community Participation), or your NDIS Transport budget. The claiming option is chosen based on your plan and preferences.

What if I don't need a WAV?

Supports can still be delivered using a standard (non-modified) vehicle if a wheelchair-accessible vehicle is not required for your needs.

NDIS Funding for Social & Community Support

Social and community participation supports are typically funded under Core Supports — Social, Economic & Community Participation (04), or Core Supports — Daily Activities (01) depending on the nature of the support. Transport is claimed as non-labour travel from the relevant Core budget, or from your NDIS Transport budget. Speak with your Support Coordinator or planner to confirm the right line items for your plan.
