Yellowbird Equip

Providing affordable solutions

At Yellowbird, we understand that having the correct equipment can help you stay safe in your own home, improve your quality of life, and increase your independence. We also know equipment can be costly, and sometimes simply out of reach.

Through our work supporting people of all ages, we are often offered donated equipment that is no longer needed but still in great condition. Rather than turn these items away to become part of the ever-increasing landfill problem, we decided to try to help.

The Yellowbird Equip service provides a range of good-quality second-hand equipment that may be specifically suited to your needs, as determined by an AT Assessor or Occupational Therapist — delivered to you in your home. Every item is sold outright at a fraction of its new price — a great option when a brand-new item isn't necessary, or while you're awaiting funding for new equipment.

Why buy from us?

  • Affordable solutions

Lower-cost options for NDIS, Aged Care, and privately funded participants.

  • Experienced support

Help from staff who understand your needs and the equipment we hold.

  • Reduce waste

Reuse quality equipment in excellent condition — and keep it out of landfill.

Delivery area — Hunter & Mid Coast NSW

Buy outright — pay once, own it

Every item is sold at a one-off upfront price — no ongoing charges. Delivery is quoted separately and your total is confirmed in writing before payment. A tax invoice is provided with every purchase, and NDIS funds can be used where the item is safe, suitable and value for money.

FAQ

Common questions

Everything you need to know about buying second-hand equipment through Yellowbird.

Do you hire or rent equipment?

No. We sell second-hand equipment only — we do not offer equipment hire, rental or loans. Each item has one upfront price, plus a delivery fee if you want it delivered. If you are not sure an item will suit you, talk to us or your therapist before buying.

Can I use my NDIS funding to buy second-hand equipment?

Yes. Under the NDIS Assistive Technology Guideline, participants can use NDIS funding to buy second-hand assistive technology where it is safe, suits your needs, and represents value for money. Yellowbird is a registered NDIS provider and we work with agency-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed participants. Include your NDIS participant number in the order form and we'll confirm eligibility.

Is the equipment safe and in good condition?

Yes. Every item is good-condition second-hand equipment that has been quality checked, cleaned and sanitised before sale. Items are sold as-is with any wear noted in the listing, and we demonstrate that the item is in working order at delivery. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law still apply.

Do you deliver the equipment?

Yes. We deliver across the Newcastle, Maitland, Dungog, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and Mid Coast LGAs. A delivery fee applies and will be quoted and confirmed in writing before you pay. Delivery includes setup and a demonstration. You can also pick your item up from our Stroud base at no charge.

Do I need an OT recommendation to buy equipment?

Not always. Many items can be purchased without a formal OT recommendation. However, for complex or high-support equipment — such as hoists or power wheelchairs — advice from an AT assessor or Occupational Therapist is strongly recommended (and is what the NDIS suggests for second-hand AT) to make sure the item is safe and right for your needs. Our Occupational Therapist and AT Mentor can both assist with a recommendation or equipment guidance if required.

Will I get a tax invoice?

Yes. A tax invoice is issued for every purchase. If you are an NDIS participant, your tax invoice is your record for claiming the purchase against your plan — we can direct billing to your plan manager or nominated contact as agreed.

How does the purchase process work?

Fill in the order form on this page with your equipment selection, personal details, and funding type. We'll review your request and contact you with a written confirmation and quote, including your delivery fee. Once you pay the confirmed total, we issue your tax invoice and arrange delivery. Items are not dispatched until you receive written confirmation from Yellowbird.

NDIS funds welcome

Under the NDIS Assistive Technology Guideline, NDIS funding can be used to buy second-hand AT where it is safe, suits your needs and is value for money. Include your NDIS participant number in the order form.

One upfront price + tax invoice

Pay once and the item is yours — no ongoing charges. A tax invoice is issued with every purchase, supporting your NDIS claim.

OT guidance available

Our Occupational Therapist can provide equipment recommendations to make sure you get the right fit for your needs.

AT Mentor Service guidance available

Our AT Mentor can help you explore and choose the right assistive technology, with practical guidance and equipment recommendations to suit your goals.

A note on what we offer. Yellowbird Equip sells a small catalogue of quality-checked, second-hand equipment and furniture — we are not a new-equipment retailer or an AT prescriber. Alongside sales, our person-centred AT Mentor guidance helps you explore and understand the supports that suit your goals. The NDIS recommends advice from an AT assessor or Occupational Therapist before buying second-hand assistive technology, and where a formal assessment or new supply is needed, we work with, and refer to, qualified suppliers and prescribers (see the NDIS "Buying assistive technology" guideline at ourguidelines.ndis.gov.au).
