Allied Health — Therapy Assistants

Allied Health Assistants that make therapy go further.

Our Allied Health Assistants work under the delegation of our Occupational Therapists and Psychologists to deliver more of your therapy program — more often, and at a lower hourly rate. They turn your therapy goals into everyday practice, so progress keeps happening between appointments.

How it works

A simple, supervised model

Allied Health Assistant support sits alongside your therapy — never replacing your therapist, always extending what they can achieve with you.

01

Therapist sets the plan

Your OT or Psychologist assesses your goals and designs the therapy program, identifying which tasks can be safely delegated to an assistant.

02

AHA delivers the practice

Your Allied Health Assistant works with you regularly to carry out those tasks — building skills, routines and confidence in everyday settings.

03

Progress is shared

The AHA documents how each session goes and feeds that straight back to your therapist, so nothing is lost between appointments.

04

Plan keeps improving

Your therapist reviews progress and adjusts the program, so your therapy keeps moving toward the outcomes that matter to you.

Delegation & Supervision

An Allied Health Assistant works under the delegation and supervision of a qualified therapist, who only delegates tasks once they are satisfied the assistant can carry them out safely and independently. The therapist remains clinically responsible for your therapy plan and outcomes at all times.

NDIS Funding for Allied Health Assistants

Therapy assistant support is funded under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living, item 15_053_0128_1_3 (Allied Health Assistant — Level 2) at $86.79 per hour. It is claimed from the same therapy budget as your OT or psychology supports. Speak with your Support Coordinator or plan manager about including AHA hours alongside your therapy.

Common questions

Allied Health Assistant FAQ

What is an Allied Health Assistant?

An Allied Health Assistant (AHA) — sometimes called a therapy assistant — delivers parts of a therapy program under the delegation and supervision of a qualified therapist, such as an Occupational Therapist or Psychologist. The therapist designs the plan; the AHA helps the person put it into practice between therapy appointments.

Do I need a therapist to use an Allied Health Assistant?

Yes. An AHA works to a program set by a therapist who remains responsible for it. If you already see one of our therapists, they can tell you whether AHA sessions would help. If your therapist is with another provider, contact us — we will discuss whether shared delegation and supervision can be arranged.

How does an AHA work with my therapist?

Your therapist remains responsible for your therapy plan and goals. They delegate specific, well-defined tasks to the AHA — for example practising a home exercise program, rehearsing a daily living skill, or supporting the use of new equipment — and only when they are satisfied the assistant can carry out the task safely. The therapist reviews progress and adjusts the plan over time.

Why use an Allied Health Assistant?

Therapy usually works best with regular practice between appointments. An AHA makes that practice possible at a lower hourly rate than a therapist, which can help therapy funding go further. Whether AHA support is right depends on your goals and the tasks involved.

How is an Allied Health Assistant funded through the NDIS?

Therapy assistant support is funded under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living, using the Allied Health Assistant item (Level 2: 15_053_0128_1_3, NDIS price limit $86.79 per hour). It comes from the same budget as your other therapy supports. Speak with your support coordinator or plan manager about including AHA hours, and we will confirm a quote.

Where are AHA sessions available?

Mobile AHA sessions cover MidCoast (including Stroud), Maitland, Dungog and Port Stephens LGAs and the Mid North Coast region. Some delegated tasks may suit telehealth — please enquire, as availability depends on your location, your therapist's plan and the tasks involved.

How do I arrange Allied Health Assistant support?

Use our online referral form, call 0433 030 949 or email info@yellowbird.au. If you already work with one of our therapists, let them know — they can discuss building AHA hours into your program.
